MALTA – Walter D. Schwinning, 82, passed away unexpectedly on April 6, 2024.
He was born in Paterson, New Jersey on October 29, 1941 a son of the late Walter and Dorothea (Drew) Schwinning. They came to the area in Walter's younger years where he graduated from Columbia High School in East Greenbush Class of 1959.
Following high school, Walter worked for a number of years as a mechanic for several Chevrolet dealerships. He later worked in construction for the Carpenter's Union where he helped build the Empire State Plaza. He then joined the Intl Brotherhood-Boilermakers as a welder.
In 1971, Walter started his own business, Schwinning Welding and Fabricating where he specialized in stock car racing chassis and oil pans. He was active in the stock car racing community and was known for his knowledge for building stock car racing headers. One of his great passions was the rebuilding and restoration of his 1937 Chevy, winning several awards. He was also known for his carpentry work, but what exceeded all of his abilities, was his kindness and his generosity, helping anyone that would need it.
Walter is survived by his daughter, Sandra (Brian) Hill; a son, Scott (Sarah) Schwinning, 2 stepdaughters, Teri Moore and Sheri (Frank) Szemplinski; a granddaughter, Arya Schwinning; 2 step grandchildren, Justin Moore and Haylie Szemplinski; his loving partner, Del; his former wife and friend, Deanne Bellinger; his friends, Walt Bedell, Joe Lazzaro and Tim Sager.
He was predeceased by his spouse, Paula Schwinning.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Friday, April 12, 2024 at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie.
