GUILDERLAND- Walter "Bud" Van Zandt, age 93, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2020 at Our Lady of Mercy Life Center.
He was born in Albany, NY, son of the late Walter and Ethel Van Zandt. He spent his childhood years in Voorheesville, NY.
He was predeceased by the love of his life of 66 years Jane E. Van Zandt in 2015, his brother Floyd (Virginia) Van Zandt and sister Agnes (Frank) Prior.
Walter served in WW II in the US Navy. He worked for the NY Central Railroad for 20 years, then retired from the US Postal Service in 1987.
He built the home where he and Jane raised their seven children: Linda, Nancy (Jack) Corliss, Barry (Debbie), Joyce, Janice (Patrick) Bell, Pam and Paul.
He loved camping in the Adirondacks, fishing, hunting, model trains, carpentry, telling a story to an audience, golfing with his brothers and brother in law, reading, doing his puzzles and especially enjoyed spending time with his family. He was proud to be a 3 letter man at Voorheesville High School in Baseball, Basketball and Football. Walter enjoyed playing the position of catcher in the early Helderberg Baseball League.
In addition to his children, nine grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren, Walter is survived by his brother, Lloyd (Elaine) Van Zandt; and sister, Judi Van Zandt and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday December 10, 2020 from 5 to 7 p.m. at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie, NY 12205. Gathering size within our chapels will be based on the most current NYS occupancy requirements. Masks are required and social distancing is to be observed inside and outside of our chapels.
