Colonie – Wendell S. Stockholm (well known as Uncle Wendell to many), 92, of Colonie, passed away on Friday, July 25, 2008 at his residence after a long illness. He was born in Franklin Forks, PA, and was the son of the late Sidney and Lucy Stockholm.
He was a WWII US Army veteran having served with the 1st Infantry Division (Big Red One) Battle of the Bulge and also participated in the North Africa, Sicily and Normandy Invasions, and was awarded several medals and citations including the Bronze Star.
Wendell operated Stockholm Brothers Garage on Western Avenue in Albany with his brother Frank for about 8-10 years and he was also proprietor of the Taborton House in Taborton, NY for 20 years. Wendell was an auto supply salesman with Stockholm Auto Supply for many years with his brother Frank. He was a member of the VFW Post 8692 and a member of the Guilderland Elks for many years.
Wendell enjoyed gambling at the casinos and having breakfast at the Farmer Boy diner with his many friends. He also enjoyed tending to yard work and planting flowers. He enjoyed all of his family including children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Wendell is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Joyce E. Stockholm; his brother Sidney and sister-in-law Betty Stockholm of Utica, NY and their sons, Gregory and Jeffrey. He is also survived by his children, Dennis J. Stockholm, Seth W. Stockholm, Ruth Ann Berlin (Don), and Douglas Winters and their respective families; his brother-in-law, Howard Cornish of Milford, NY; sisters-in-law, Jerri Houlihan (Bob) of Rotterdam, NY, Betty Cornish of Milford, NY and JoAnn Vass of Cooperstown, NY; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Franklin J. Stockholm.
Funeral services will be Tuesday morning at 9:30 am at New Comer-Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie (Rte. 155 south of Central Ave.). Calling hours will be Monday from 4-8 pm at the funeral home. Interment will be in Memory's Garden.
