ST. CLOUD, FLA – William A. "Bill" Haskell, 86, passed away on Thursday, October 16, 2014 following a lengthy illness. Bill was the son of the late Frances (Allen) Haskell and Alton Haskell.
Along with his parents, Bill was predeceased by his beloved wife of 40 years, Dolores (Spath) Haskell.
He is survived by his longtime companion, Betty Padgett of St. Cloud, Fla.; sons Mark (Katrina) Haskell of Rotterdam, and Alan (Bonnie) Haskell of Malta; sister Jane Schroeder of Allyn, Washington; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and two nieces.
Bill graduated from Watervliet High School and then enlisted in the US Naval Reserves to serve his country during WWII. Following the war, Bill transferred to active duty and continued to serve until his discharge in 1948. Following discharge, he attended Albany Business College, graduating in 1951. Bill married Dolores in 1953 and moved to Loudonville to raise his family. He was employed by the Lorillard Corporation for 40 years, retiring in 1994. Bill was an avid sportsman and gifted athlete, especially baseball and tennis. He earned several gold medals playing tennis in the Senior Olympics. Bill coached his sons' baseball teams for many years and always enjoyed coaching and helping young athletes. He was a Life Member of VFW Post 729 and past State VFW Commander. He was also a member of the American Legion, Shriners and the Elks. Bill enjoyed traveling, especially cruising in the Caribbean with Betty.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517,Topeka, KS 66675 in Bill's name.
