ROTTERDAM – William B. Lockyer, 76, died Friday, August 31, 2007, at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany. Born in Suffern, he was the son of the late Alfred and Bertha Pierce Lockyer and a graduate of the Suffern High School Class of 1949. Mr. Lockyer served in the US Army during the Korean War. He worked as a manager for A & P in Rockland County for 20 years and later was the proprietor of the Country Store in Livingston, NY, for four years. He also worked at the Star Market in Guilderland from 1976 to 1986, and then was the manager of the commissary at the Albany County Jail for 10 years before his retirement in 1996. On July 10, 1954, William married Muriel Elizabeth Shaver. Mrs. Lockyer passed away on July 15, 2007 after 53 loving years.
Mr. Lockyer is survived by his son, Dennis G. Lockyer of Pittsfield, Mass.; three grandchildren, Paul, Morgan and Julia Lockyer; his brothers, David Lockyer of Tallman, NY and Russell Smith of Gloversville. He was predeceased by his brother, Ronald Lockyer.
Mr. Lockyer was a life member and past commander of VFW Post 7062, a member of American Legion Post 977 in Altamont. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, also New York State Conspicuous Cross awarded by Governor George Pataki in 1998, plus the 50-year anniversary medal for Korean War Service.
He was a member of the Ramapo Valley Ambulance Corps in the 1960s and at the time of his death was a member of Helderberg Reformed Church in Guilderland Center. Mr. Lockyer was an avid sports fan.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie (Rt. 155-south off Central Ave.). Calling hours will precede a service on Tuesday from 12 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Memory's Garden, Colonie.
