William G. "Bill" Benedict, 84, of Valatie, passed away peacefully on January 4, 2025, surrounded by the love and presence of his family.
Born and raised in Tully, NY, Bill was the beloved son of the late William Benedict and Dorothy (Sherwood) Bigsby. A graduate of Tully High School, he was a proud member of the basketball team and developed a passion for the game that stayed with him throughout his life.
After high school, Bill joined the U.S. Air Force, where he served with distinction in Germany and Spain. His service was marked by memorable experiences, including meeting President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, as well as playing basketball against the iconic Harlem Globetrotters.
Upon completing his military service, Bill began a career in law enforcement, working as a police officer for the railroad and other police departments. On October 19, 1968, he married the love of his life, Karin Schmidt. Together, they built a beautiful life centered on love, family, and a deep commitment to one another.
Bill dedicated 40 years to the railroad police force, working diligently until his retirement, often putting in long hours, including many double shifts. In his later years, he devoted himself to his family, cherishing every moment spent with his grandchildren, who brought him immense pride and joy.
A proud veteran, Bill found camaraderie and lifelong friendships as a member of the Melvin Roads American Legion Post 1231. He enjoyed life’s simple pleasures: gardening, cooking, grocery shopping, and cheering for college basketball. An avid outdoorsman, Bill’s hunting skills were so renowned that he was humorously "banned" from many Big Buck contests.
Known for his sharp wit, steadfast loyalty, fierce protection of family, and quiet acts of generosity, Bill was a man who always put others first, often without seeking acknowledgment. His strength, kindness, and unwavering love for his family will be forever remembered.
Bill is survived by his devoted wife, Karin; his daughter, Tami (the late Allan) Richter; and his son, Tim (Lori) Benedict. He was the proud and beloved “Poppy” of his grandchildren, Garrett Benedict and Reese and Jillian Richter. He is also survived by his nephew, John (Deb) Benedict; several brothers- and sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.
In accordance with Bill’s wishes, a private service with full military honors will be held at Saratoga National Cemetery at a later date.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the C5 Ward at Albany Medical Center, for the compassionate care provided to Bill, with special thanks to Naomi and Dr. Lobe.
Bill’s legacy of love, service, and kindness will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
