SCHENECTADY – William Clemons Stankus, 82, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 1, 2009 at Ellis Hospital after a short illness and was surrounded by his loving family.
William was born on September 14, 1926 in Albany and was the son of the late Julius G. and Margaret (Jensis) Stankus. He served in the US Navy during WWII. He worked as an automobile machinist for Detroit Auto Supply and then Riitano Brothers Machine Company, both in Schenectady. He retired in 1992. William was affectionately known as Willie, Bill and Uncle Clem.
William was one of ten siblings and family was very important to him especially family gatherings and dinners. He enjoyed his computer and was a collector of "things", and his joy was to pass "things" on to others to enjoy and he would end his telephone calls with "have fun".
William is survived by four brothers and sisters, Veronica Smith of Albany, Frances Russo and June Stankus both of Schenectady and Richard Stankus and his wife Janice of Colonie. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Alfred, Leo, Julius, Joseph and Lawrence Stankus.
The family would like extend their sincere thanks to the staff at Ellis Hospital, especially A6, C5 and C4, to Community Hospice of Schenectady and to Dr. Yee for all their care and comfort given to William
Funeral services will be held at 9:00 a.m. Saturday at New Comer-Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave.) then to St. Joseph's Church, Schenectady, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Memory's Garden in Colonie. Calling hours will be held on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
