William E. Doran

May 10, 1949 — May 5, 2016

William (Bill) Edward Doran, also known by friends and family as "Hooch" passed away at UCSD Medical Center in San Diego, CA on May 5, 2016 at the age of 66.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Donna Russell Doran; his son Kwinn Doran, PhD, daughter-in-law Elizabeth Doran and his three grandchildren Giacomo, Ely and Calypso Doran all of Coronado, California; his brother Frank Doran of Auburndale, FL; his sister Barbara Doran Higgins of Taveres, FL; and many nieces and nephews. He is lovingly remembered by family and friends.
Born to Alberta (Jordan) and Frank J Doran on May 10, 1949 in Albany NY, Bill resided in Upstate NY until his recent move to Coronado, California. He graduated from Colonie Central High School and went on to earn an Associate Degree from Hudson Valley Community College while working as a Teamster. He was a Vice-President and Business Manager for Cole-Layer-Trumble for over 25 years.
During his life, and especially in retirement, Bill enjoyed traveling, working as a consultant, writing, fishing, golfing, biking, playing cards, sharing time with his friends, and, most importantly, being with his family. His son, daughter-in-law and three grandchildren lit up his life, and those who knew him know how much he loved his wife and cherished his family and friends. He and his wife moved to Coronado to be near their 'kids' in August, 2016. Bill became involved in the community and thrived – joining the Senior Center, participating in local activities, playing pinochle, and reading his poetry as an invited author at library events. They both cherished the time they spent together in Coronado.
Bill's optimism and unwavering spirit in the face of major health obstacles have been an inspiration to many. He will be missed beyond measure. Both Bill and Donna have been surrounded with love and support from friends and family for the past 2+ years – and with love and joy for many years prior. They hope and trust that their loved ones know how very much that kindness and friendship is treasured.
Visiting hours will be held on Saturday, May 14, 2016 from 9:00-11:00 am at New Comer Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie, NY (www.newcomeralbany.com), with a funeral service immediately after. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens, 983 Watervliet-Shaker Road in Colonie.
The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to the medical community at Albany Medical Center, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, the University of California San Diego Medical Center and City of Hope for their caring, support and innovative expertise; to the anonymous German citizen who donated stem cells to aid in battling Bill's blood cancer; and to the multitude of people who donated the blood needed to extend his life. Those wishing to honor Bill are invited to donate to Be the Match (https://bethematch.org) or the American Red Cross (www.redcross.org) in the form of financial, tissue or volunteer services. Donors are heroes – it is as simple and profound as that.
