William "Bill" Young, 65, passed away suddenly at his residence on February 19, 2013. He was born in the Bronx N.Y. to the late William and Amy. Bill attended Cardinal Spellman High School and went on to obtain an M.A. (with honors) in Modern European History from Fordham University and subsequently a M.S (with honors) from Columbia University in Library Science. Bill retired in 2006 after 25 years of service with SUNY at Albany. He was head of the library's reference department and oversaw the collection on Humanism and Religious Studies. Bill was of the past in that he was gifted with a classical education and enjoyed reading –often in Latin- the foundational works of Western philosophy and Christianity. He was an active participant at St. Mary's Church on Capitol Hill and with Albany's Democratic Party, 11th ward. He had a cottage in England and used several sabbaticals to explore the libraries of the English universities and wrote a biography of a member of President Roosevelt's cabinet; Rufus Miles.
Bill is survived by his brother, Richard Young, nephew Christian Young, niece Jennifer Young and 'great' nieces Isabel and Carmen.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Bill's memory, to the North Greenbush Library, Main Ave Wynantskill, NY.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 1:00 pm at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie. Calling hours will be from 11 to 1 at the funeral home. On Sunday Bill will be prayed for during the Prayer of Remembrance, held at the 11am Mass at St. Henry's Catholic Church in Averill Park.
