NISKAYUNA – William J. Allmond, 91, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, December 20, 2013. Born in Altoona, PA he was the son of the late John and Mary Allmond. Bill graduated from Altoona High School in 1940 and from Juniata College in 1949. He served in the Army during World War II and was involved in the invasion of Normandy in 1944. He was the recipient of five Bronze Stars. Bill's thirty year career was as a district sales manager for Kellogg's Cereal Company, which took him all over New York State and parts of New England. Anyone who asked Bill about cereal was entertained with his wonderful stories, and his adventures and experiences as a traveling salesman. Bill was a league bowler and avid golfer for many years, and enjoyed playing well into his eighties with his own "dream team" of golfing buddies. Bill loved the Big Band music of the 1940's and owned a large collection of records and CD's of the famous orchestras and swing bands. He not only knew the names of all the popular songs and obscure ones, but enjoyed "performing" by singing along and even dancing to his favorite tunes. His all-time favorite singer was Ol' Blue Eyes, Frank Sinatra, who Bill had an opportunity to see in person as the first performer at the "new" Knickerbocker Arena.
Bill was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary Lou (Cassarly) Allmond. He is the devoted father of Kathleen (James) Allmond-Glywa and Edward (Bonnie) Allmond. Bill is the cherished grandfather of Rebecca, and the loving brother of Mary Lou. Also surviving is his faithful dog and constant companion, Hans. In addition to his parents, Bill was predeceased by his brothers, Forrest, Ermine and Raymond, and his sister, Gertrude. Bill's family would like to express their sincere gratitude to all of the wonderful friends and neighbors, Hospice of Schenectady, Bayada Home Health Care and Ed Russo, for their continuous support and compassion in managing his care during his illness.
Funeral services will be Friday at 11:00 a.m. at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave). Calling hours will be Thursday from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna.
