Schenectady- William J. (Bill) McGroty of Schenectady, New York passed into eternal life Monday, October 24th after a short illness. He was born July 31, 1921 in Massena New York to the late Fred and Ruth (Dowe) McGroty. William served in the United States Navy during WWII. He was instrumental in the development and launching of USS SEAWOLF Nuclear Submarine while working as a nuclear engineer at the Knolls Power Laboratory. He later worked for more than 30 years at St. Clare's Hospital in the Security Department. William then went to work at the Teresian House, before retiring in 2002, to enjoy his favorite pastime playing bingo with his beloved wife of 57 years Emily (Vigus) McGroty.
In addition to his beloved wife Emily, William is survived by his three daughtersSharon McBride of Rotterdam, Shirley LaPrade of Schenectady and Coleen Fowler of Colonie, seven grandchildren, David Barringer, Christopher LaPrade, Adam Sheldon, Noah Sheldon, Eli Sheldon, Tim Fowler, and Hannah Treis, and five great-grandchildren Nicholas Barringer, Jerome Thrasher, Tylor Peragine, Alexander Sheldon, and Sarah Sheldon. He is also survived by nieces nephews and cousins, especially his beloved cousin Maryann Malkiewicz of Colonie and many close friends.
A memorial mass will be said in Williams Honor on November 19, 2005 at 11:00 AM at the Teresian House Infant of Prague Chapel, Washington Avenue Extension, Albany. Friends and relatives are invited to attend. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to the Teresian House Foundation or a charity of your choice.
