COLONIE - William J. "Rip" Rowan Jr., 78, passed away on Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at Albany Memorial Hospital.
Rip was born in Schenectady, NY on October 7, 1935 and was the son of the late William Rowan, Sr. and Clarissa Rowan. He was a graduate of Ithaca College with Bachelor of Science in Communications. He served in the US Air Force and was a member of the Saratoga Post #70 of the American Legion. He was employed in Radio/Television Industry for 35 years, 21 of which was at WTEN-TV, Albany NY, as Sports Director and Anchor.
Rip was also a member of the U.S. Golf Writers Association; Harness Writers Association; US Basketball Writers Association; former member of Wolferts Roost Country Club and Saratoga Elks; he was a veracious New Yankees fan - except when they have a bad year!!!
He spent 18yrs in Professional Baseball with the Albany Colonie Yankees, Colonie Diamond Dogs and Tri City Valley Cats. He also worked in sales/marketing for Sprint USA, retiring in 2006.
Rip is survived by daughter Dawn C. Rowan, her husband Ricky and their son Adrian Bruno of Carrboro, NC; son William J. Rowan IV, his wife Staci and their daughters Clarissa and Catherine Rowan of Albany; Paula J. Martin, her husband Doug and their son and daughter Evan and Arlyss Martin of Sandown, NH.
A service will be at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, November 23, 2013 at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie, NY. Calling hours will precede the service from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.
