William J. Smith, 62, passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with Leukemia on Monday, May 16, 2011 at the Community Hospice Inn, surrounded by his loving family. Bill was born in Albany to Shirley Smith and the late Ernest Smith. He was a Police officer for the City of Albany until his retirement and later worked as an armed security guard for ODAR in Albany until his illness. Bill loved to travel especially to Las Vegas and Aruba. He enjoyed playing cards with his buddies, horse racing and spending time with his family.
In addition to his mother, Bill is survived by his loving wife, Holly (Gonya) Smith. He is the brother of; Ernest (Roxy), David (Mary), Donald (Debra), Allen (Robin), Linda (Kevin) Zink and Richard (Shannon) Smith. He is the stepfather of; William (Hilary) Montesano and Gina (Timothy) McMahon. He is the beloved grandfather of, Kaleb Green, Nathan McMahon and Adelaide, William and Jillian Montesano. His two dear friends, Jack Gorman and Richard Hendrick and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Dr. Stephen Hillinger and the staff at NYOH and the staff at St. Peters outpatient infusion, for all of their care and compassion given to Bill.
Funeral services will be Thursday at 10:15 am at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., then to Mater Christi where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30am. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 4 to 8 at the funeral home. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
