COLONIE – William O. John, 84, died on Tuesday, February 15, 2005 at the Albany VA Hospital.
William was born on July 31, 1920 in Troy to the late Evan David and Beatrice (Finnen) John. He was one of nine children, having four sisters and four brothers. He and his brothers were WWII Veterans, four of them serving in the Navy and one in the Army. He was predeceased by 3 sisters and 3 brothers.
William served in the US Navy during WWII where he served on the USS Phelps during the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, attaining the rank of Chief Petty Officer.
William is survived by two sons, Michael O. (Judy) John of Klamath Falls, OR and E. David (Peggy) John of San Jose, CA; a stepdaughter, Dorothy Tretel of Brentwood, CA; a sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Rutnick of FL; a brother, Robert John of FL; 6 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Helen Elizabeth John.
A graveside committal service with military honors will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Memory's Garden in Colonie.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the retired Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet (make the check payable to the Gurry Trust Fund) 385 Watervliet-Shaker Rd., Latham, NY 12110 in memory of William O. John.
