Obituary, William M. Quinlisk (born 9/27/1951; died 5/16/2022)
William (Bill) Quinlisk died peacefully at age 70 after a heroic fight against cancer. A graduate of St. John Fisher College, and having earned a M.Ed. from Nazareth College, Bill devoted his career to cultivating young minds through teaching and coaching. He taught at St. Ambrose Elementary School, McQuaid Jesuit High School, and the Rochester City School District before retiring in 2009. But running was his passion, which he shared with young people by coaching track and cross country at many schools, including McQuaid Jesuit High School, Rochester Institute of Technology, and Rensselaer Polytechnical Institute. Bill instilled in his runners the belief that working towards a goal can be done with joy and laughter.
Bill also shared his passion for running with the larger community by hosting hundreds of road races, track meets, and cross county events throughout upstate NY. Since 1997, he has been active in the USA Track and Field Association (USATF) and served as President of the Niagara and Adirondack Associations, as an officer of Masters LDR, and as member of the Cross County Championships Committee. Bill has won numerus awards for his contributions to the running community, culminating with his 2021 induction into the USATF Masters Long Distance Running Hall of Fame.
Predeceased by his father, Willam P. Quinlisk, Bill is survived by his wife, Patricia Warth; his mother, Barbara Quinlisk; his brothers, John, Thomas (Liz), Daniel (Barbara), Dennis (Brenda), and James (Diane); his nieces and nephews, John, Abigail, Andrew, Katherine, Amy, Colin, Andrew, Brian, and Michael, as well as his treasured life-long friends. Bill will be remembered for his unassuming nature, his integrity, his infectious sense of humor, his love of storytelling, and his ability to make those in his presence feel valued. Bill showed it is possible to fulfill the Jesuit motto to be "a man for others" and have fun doing it.
A Funeral Mass for Bill will take place on July 2 at 10:00 am at St. Thomas More Church, 2617 East Avenue, Rochester, NY. A Celebration of Bill's life will follow at 2:30 pm, Old Meadow Pavillion, Ellison Park, Rochester, NY.
