Albany- William V. Schaf, Sr., 88, passed away peacefully at the Teresian House in Albany, NY. Born at home in Albany, NY on January 7, 1929, Bill was the son of the late John and Anna (Schumskey) Schaf. After high school, Bill enlisted at the age of 17 to serve his country in the US Army. He bravely served as a paratrooper and a medic in the 11th Airborne Division during the occupation of Japan. He also served during the Korean Conflict in which he was a POW. After his honorable discharge from the Army, he met and married Mary Holland. She predeceased him in 1961. He then met and married Lorraine Tomczak in 1963. For many years, Bill was the owner and operator of Action Television in Colonie. He also worked for the New York State education department until his retirement. Bill was an avid bowler, playing on several leagues over the years. He also enjoyed German Polka music and tinkering with electronics.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Lorraine; his children: William V. Schaf, Jr., Kathleen M. (Michael) Murtagh and John S. (Roberta) Schaf; his grandchildren: Corey J. Schaf, Tyler D. Schaf, Liam M. Murtagh and several nieces, nephews and friends.
In addition to his parents, Bill was predeceased by his siblings: John, George, Dorothy and Marie.
Bill's family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff of the fourth floor at the Teresian House for their compassionate and loving care.
Memorial visitation will be held from 9 am to 11 am on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at New Comer Funerals & Cremations, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands.
