Deacon Willie Conyers was born on November 12, 1934, in Greeleyville, SC, to his late parents Deacon Fred Conyers, Sr. and Deaconess Lue Thomas Conyers.
Deacon Conyers received Christ and was baptized at an early age at St. John 4-B Baptist Church in Greeleyville. He was educated in the public school there. After graduating, he moved to Troy, NY to join his older siblings.
Deacon Conyers was a faithful member of the United Ordained Church, 292 3rd Street, Troy, NY, where Bishop Dr. F.A. Edmunds is the Pastor. He loved his church and was a faithful member.
Deacon Conyers was married to the late Hannah Stinney Conyers. They established their home in Troy. This marriage was blessed with three wonderful children: Wendell ("Wendy"), Brenda, and Wilbert ("Pooh"), all of whom lived in Troy. They preceded him in death. Deacon Conyers was also blessed with three other awesome children: Cindy Montgomery and Geraldine Montgomery of Troy, NY, and George (Brenda) Gavins of Brooklyn, NY. They took great care of him during his illness.
Deacon Conyers was his parents' seventh of nine children. His parents and all of his siblings preceded him to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ: Fred Conyers, Jr. (Virgiree McDonald Conyers), Lelia Mae Conyers Gibson (Samuel), James Conyers (Beatrice Middleton Conyers), Mabel Conyers Pompey (Charles), *Sam Conyers, Sr. (Alethia Bennett Conyers), *Martha Conyers Gamble (Clarence) - , Louvenia Conyers and Lee Conyers.
Deacon Conyers was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He had a very compassionate heart. In his younger years, he traveled around the country to visit family and friends. He adored his parents, and would visit them often in Greeleyville. In his later years, he enjoyed sitting at Prospect Park enjoying nature and watching children play.
Deacon Conyers had a passion for repairing vehicles. He was an excel-lent mechanic. Most days he could be found at his mechanic shop. He was eager to get his customers' vehicles up and running again. His other passions were singing and playing the guitar. He taught himself to play the guitar as a young boy. He taught his son Wendy to play the guitar also. He shared his talent to repair vehicles with his sons Wendy and Pooh.
Father God called Deacon Conyers home on March 8, 2021. He leaves to cherish his precious memories his children: Cindy Montgomery, Geraldine Montgomery, and George Gavins. A grandson who was like a son to him, Detective Sgt. Anthony (Sarah) Conyers of the Troy Police Department. One sister-in-law, Queen Dukes Conyers of Troy. A large number of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Calling hours will be held at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 181 Troy Schenectady Rd., Watervliet, New York on Thursday March 18, 2021 from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm. A funeral service will immediately follow the visitation at 12:00 pm. Burial will follow at Elmwood Hill Cemetery. Gathering size within our chapels will be based on the most current NYS occupancy requirements. Masks are required and social distancing is to be observed inside and outside of our chapels.
