SCHENECTADY – Wilson Alfred Gerry, Jr., 85, of Saint Joseph Street, Schenectady, went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, March 1, 2007. He passed away at Ellis Hospital.
Mr. Gerry was born on June 30, 1921 in Worcester, MA and was the son of the late Wilson A. and Edith Gerry. He graduated from Clark School of the Deaf, Holden, MA. Following graduation he secured work in the newspaper industry as a linotype setter. His first job was with the Katonah Record in Katonah, NY. While there he met and married his cherished wife, Mary Bille Horne on September 9, 1945. After his marriage his main priority became his family. He worked on newspapers in Middletown, NY and in the Capital District, including the Schenectady Gazette, the Knickerbocker News and the Times Union, from which he retired in 1984.
Mr. Gerry was a longtime beloved member of the Pineview Community Church where he served faithfully on the Ushering team. Many of the Pineview Preschool cubbies, and some of the enclosed glass bulletin boards near the church office are reminders of his loving involvement in the Lord's work.
Mr. Gerry enjoyed gardening, woodworking, and watch repair. For many years he was a handyman for family, church, and friends. He was an energetic communicator. He had all kinds of stories which he repeated to anyone who would listen. Very often he'd leave a new acquaintance with this trilogy: "Have a nice day. Don't work too hard. I don't want the boss to hear me". It always ended with a chuckle for them both. He was a man loved and enjoyed by all he met.
Mr. Gerry is survived by his wife, Mary: two daughters, Ruth Oesch and her husband Jeffrey of Schenectady, and Jacqueline Maxim and her husband Jonathan of Pensacola, FL; one son, William Gerry and his wife, Lorraine Smith of Charlotte, NC; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his oldest daughter, Grace Tebo and his sister, Lillian Thorpe.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday at Pineview Community Church with the Rev. Brian French, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow at Memory's Garden, Colonie. Calling hours will be held at New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Pineview Community Church, 251 Washington Ave. Ext., Albany, NY 12205.
