Yung Ching Shen

October 11, 1953 — August 25, 2016

Dr. Yung Ching Shen, a dedicated Academic and a devoted father who saw no boundaries, died at age 62.

On Jan 31, 2015, while taking his regular swimming exercise, Dr. Shen suffered a cardiac arrest and was rescued from the bottom of the pool. He bravely held onto life but sustained a severe traumatic brain injury. With the love and support of his wife and children, Dr. Yung Ching Shen lived on for the next year and half.

To most people, Dr. Shen was studious, hardworking, stern, and taciturn. To those close to him, he was very passionate in his beliefs and loved a good laugh. No one guffawed to America's Funniest Home Video louder than he. He was a champion of an active mind and body. He was a champion of democracy and fairness. Once he set his mind to a goal, there's was very little one could do stop him - that is unless one proved a better argument. A true logician at heart, he was considered one of the best students of Logic at Cheng Kung University in Tainan, Taiwan. It was there he met his wife of 36 years.

Dr. Shen's belief in the power of scholarship propelled him to serve as the President of Phi Tau Phi Scholastic Honor Society. He loved being American and held dear its open society - the freedom to pursue your dreams. He loved learning. This took him to University of Anne Arbor, Carnegie Mellon and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to study computer science at its budding infancy. Dr. Shen loved research and kept it up vigorously through out his career. He also maintained an editorial position at ASCE to help elevate his peers and encourage development. He loved music. Dr. Shen took his children to private music classes every week. Unfortunately, they never formed the piano/violin/cello Shen family ensemble he so dearly wished for. As a result, he started teaching himself the piano a few years ago.

Lastly, Dr. Shen loved his family and sacrificed his personal pursuits full-time to raise 3 kids, one of whom has special needs. He saw beyond the stereotypes for a person with a disability, and set far reaching goals for his Autistic Son. His unrelenting effort and heartbreaking dedication enriched his son's life with a tool set to achieve a college education and self-reliance.

The last year and a half was a struggle in opposition to the vigorous life and ideals of Dr. Shen. However, it was the greatest challenge anyone could ever have been handed. It was his last fight and he handled it beautifully. Dr. Yung Ching Shen will be dearly missed by his wife, children, grandchildren, family and friends.
